2003 Decoy Napa Valley Red Wine
Just as our Duckhorn wines are produced from classic Bordeaux varietals, so too are the wines of our second label-Decoy. The varietal composition of Decoy changes with each vintage, utilizing fruit from young vines, research lots, or lots that do not demonstrate the style we are seeking for the Duckhorn Vineyards wines.
In The Vineyard
The 2003 growing season was marked by a cool, wet spring. Summer was quickly upon us and the carry-over moisture resulted in vigorous vine growth. A heat spike occurred at the early part of flowering, causing some shatter that reduced the yields. Summer and early fall were relatively mild, but during the latter part of the harvest we incurred a flourish of heat. The season ended with an extended mild period, allowing harvest to conclude at a relaxed pace.
Comments from the Winemaker
This approachable wine has a finesse that is balanced by a firm structure and bright acidity. The aroma is abundant with strawberry jam, black cherry, cedar, tobacco, and black olive. The flavors are distinct with blackberry, black pepper, subtle oak, and cassis.
